ICLHE educators’ professional development: From experience to expertise
Workshop Facilitators: Jenny Valcke, Julie Walaszczyk & T.J. Ó Ceallaigh, ICLHE Board members
Abstract: The crux of effective ICLHE teaching is content and language integration, yet teaching with a dual focus on content and language is challenging for a myriad of reasons. Scholars agree that ICLHE is distinct from either traditional language teaching or content teaching and that it requires specific pedagogical skill sets and knowledge base. To address the challenges inherent in teaching languages through content, this workshop is designed to provide guidance for ICLHE educators in integrating language development with content instruction. During this workshop, participants will:
- Identify the challenges in teaching with a dual focus on language and content.
- Seek explanations for challenges in ICLHE and suggest sustainable pedagogical solutions.
- Craft, share and critique instructional strategies for scaffolding language learning in ICLHE.
- Explore ways of promoting intercultural competence through ICLHE.
- Engage ICLHE educators in reflection and critical thinking so that they can continuously examine and improve their classroom practices.
- Discuss future directions and developments in ICLHE pedagogy.
